Open letter to Nyahururu Municipal Council

Letter to the Editor

Your worship the Mayor, the fellow councillors of various wards and all the heads of the various departments in the Nyahururu municipal council.
I wish to bring to your attention the following important message:-  To start with let me correct all the councillors on the words they used on Mashujaa Day when they referred the demonstrators as “idlers” by informing them that Nyahururu town no longer houses idlers because even the pick pocketers and conmen are always busy looking for any protruding wallets or phones to snatch.
Point of correction sirs and  madams. The people who were demonstrationg on October 19 2011 included the following:
1.Nyahururu Jua Kali association
2. Nyahururu stage business community
3.Nyahururu Boda boda association
4.Nyahururu market welfare association.
5.Nyahururu mutumba welfare association
6.  Nyahururu estate agents
7. Nyahururu shoe shiners association
8. Nyahururu butcher welfare association
9. Nyahururu residents of various estates
10. Entire business community of Nyahururu town.
It is  extremely barbaric and an absurdity of the highest order to refer to the above groups as idlers.  None of the above is an idler and that leaves no doubt.
Ladies and gentlemen,  all protocols observed, below are the grievances the above groups intended to present before you and the District Commissioner Madam Lucy Mulili the day the demonstration was cancelled.
  1. Rampant grabbing of public land e.g. cemeteries and public parks.
2. Poor status or roads within the town and its estate.
3. Poor planning of our town causing obstruction hence regular accidents e.g. near Karuga matatu terminus at the Hospital/Macharia Roads junction.
4. Public health & sanitation negligence e.g. Ndunyu road where butcheries, shops, bars and hotel collects a lot of dust posing outbreak of air bone diseases.
5. High water and sewerage charges in Nyahururu more than in any other town in Kenya.
6. Unattended parking bays while the municipal council continues collecting parking levies.
7.Motorcycle boda boda unprovided with parking bays hence causing conflict between them and other businessmen.
8.  Double and triple taxation in the market on farm produce hence traders from areas like Ol-Kalou, Ol-Joro-Orok, Kinamba and Mairo-Inya opting to go to Nyeri and Nakuru avoiding Nyahururu town market.
9.  Undistributed lights within Nyahururu municipality and failure to ensure the already installed are lighten on daily basis thus causing insecurity in some part of  the town to the pedestrian.
10.  Undistributed sewage disposal and drainage system particularly in lower Core-site, Chemichemi, Maina estate and Manguo estate respectively.
11.Nepotism during employment in Nyahururu municipal and Nyahuwasco same members of the family working in those institutions.
12.  The previous owners of wooden kiosks that were demolished by the municipal council to construct permanent ones are fearing that they might nor be considered in the allocation of the new ones even after having paid Sh 36,000/- because some councillors are said to have  been seen showing some intruders the new kiosks.
If the above matters are attended to, then our current leaders are at least assured that there will be no more demonstration in our town.
Likewise, if the above matters are ignored then they should well know that exams which the OCS used as an excuse to stop the demonstration are not sat forever, if anything article 37 of the current constitution does not only guarantees the right to demonstrate it also assures as security from police officers as we demonstrate.
Madam D.C it is my prayer that one of these home news copy reaches you in time.  Guess why?  Because we were not given a chance to reach  a copy of memorandum to you, but once you’ve read this, then you’ve the content.
Finally, let me advise our local councillors to stop boastful language while addressing the residents of Nyahururu like they did when they changed the Shujaa day into a stage to attack the demonstrators because the power to get them our of those seat or retain them remained with the residents.

Githaiga Francis
Fra-nduh, Nyahururu
